Ekadashi May 2024 Date and Time, Rituals, Significance and History 

Ekadashi is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is celebrated during the shukla paksha and krishna Paksha in the month of Vaishakha in 2024. It is a day of the great reverence in Hinduism that is observed with fasting and devotion to obtain blessings and purify oneself of sins.

Mohini Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Vaishakha, according to Drik Panchang, Ekadashi will be observed on 19 May this year. Ekadashi Tithi will begin at 11:22 a.m. on 18 May and will end on 19 May at 1:50. 

Ekadashi is purely dedicated to worship Lord Vishnu and devotees all over the world who follow Iskcon, celebrate this day with immense devotion and observe strict fast to seek blessing of Lord Vishnu.

Ekadashi is popularly observed within Vaishnavism and The Shaivism, two major paths of the Sanatan Dharma. Followers offer their worship to the gods Vishnu and Shiva by fasting or just symbolically, the idea was always to receive self- discipline and the benefits of fasting.

Ekadashi May 2024 Significance

Ekadashi is a sanskriti word, which means the eleventh. It refers to the eleventh day of the fortnight belonging to the lunar month. There are two fortnightly days in a lunar month, the bright and the dark. So that means Ekadashi occurs twice in a month for bright fortnight and for dark fortnight. 

The timing of each Ekadashi is according to the position of the moon. The Indian calendar marks progression from a full moon to a new moon as divided into fifteen equal arcs and each arc measures one lunar day, called a tithi. 

On this significant day, The Lord Vishnu manifested as a nymph marking it as a pivotal Ekadashi. Devotees engage in strict fasting, Conduct puja ceremonies and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Charitable deeds, providing meals to Brahmins, and pilgrimages to the Krishna temples are deemed especially meritorious.   

In Hinduism, the primary form of fasting on Ekadashi is to gain control over the mind and body senses, and channel it toward spiritual progression. In addition, there are several health benefits to fasting. Particularly on the 11th day from new moon or full moon days, the pressure is very light. This moon is supposed to influence the mind. 

Ekadashi May 2024 Rituals

Devotees wake up early on this day and take holy bath, then they place the idol of Lord Vishnu and Goddess. They also start a strict fast to seek the blessing of Lord Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi. Devotees break the fast on the next day of Ekadashi. People perform charity work on this day.

There are some rituals that follow by the Devotees:

  • Wake up early in the morning.
  • Clean the house and especially the puja room of your house.
  • Give bath to the idol Krishna and Ladoo Gopal ji.
  • Adorn them with the clothes and tilak garland.
  • Take a wooden plank and place an idol of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna and Ladoo Gopal ji along with the Shree Yantra.
  • Light a diya with desi ghee in front of the idol and take a sankalp of observing Ekadashi fast with full devotion.
  • Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” Mantra 108 times. 
  • Offer panchamrit and tulsi dal to the lord and seek blessings.
  • In the evening also, one must offer prayers to lord Vishnu and perform aarti.
  • Those who are unable to bear hunger, they can eat fruits and milk products in the evening and finally they must break their fast on the next day during Parana Time.

There are some different ways to observe the Ekadashi fasting in the method:

  • Devotees observe complete fasting without even the water on this Ekadashi day.
  • Devotees consume only water (its optional)
  • Devotees consume milk and milk products.
  • Devotees consume only fruits.
  • Devotees have a single meal, in the later part of the day with dishes made of Sabudana or Singhada.

History of Ekadashi May 2024

The story behind the Ekadashi began with Vishnu sleeping or in a meditative state. A demon approached and attempted to attack on Vishnu, At that time a beautiful woman spring forth form Vishnu’s 11th sense called mind. An infatuated asked to marry her, to which she responded that she would agree only if he defeated her in battle. 

As they fought that evil was eventually killed, Vishnu awoke from sleep and blessed the women by naming her Ekadashi, and stated that if anyone were to fast one this day, they would attain moksha.
