Vat Savitri Puja History

The Vat Savitri Fast is observed by married women for the well-being of their marital life and the long lives of their husbands. The women worship Goddess Gauri on this day and observe fast to get the divine blessing of the goddess.

According to Hindu beliefs, the Vat Savitri fast is associated with the story of Savitri and Satyawan. Savitri was the daughter of the King and she was married to Satyavan, who was cursed to die after a year of marriage.

Savitri is determined to save her husband’s life, but due to the curse, he dies when he is cutting the wood under a banyan tree. But Savitri did not accept his death and performed severe penance under the banyan tree to save her husband’s life by rebelling against Lord Yam.

Lord Yam was impressed with her determination and granted her the life of her husband.

The Vat Savitri Vrat resembles the essence of the Savitri and Satyavan’s story and the married women worship for the longevity of their husbands.

Vat Savitri Puja Significance

The Vat Savitri puja is done on the Banyan tree, women tie the raksha sutra on the tree. According to the Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva (all tridev) reside in the banyan tree.

So, when women perform the Vat Savitri puja under the Banyan tree, they worship all the gods and get the blessing to ward off death from their husband’s lives. The Banyan tree also resembles knowledge and longevity adding its importance to Vat Savitri puja.

The fast also brings happiness & prosperity to the life of devotees. The women also pray for the offspring through Vat Savitri Puja as King  Ashwapati got Savitri from the blessing of Savitri Devi.
