On Thursday, the Manitoba government revealed the initial measures to do away with paper health cards. The long-running cards made of paper will be replaced by plastic cards, funded in the next provincial budget.

This is a significant first step regarding a fully digitized network that will eventually provide Manitobans with quicker control over their health records. Before the provincial election, Premier Wab Kinew pledged to do so during the 680 CJOB leaders’ discussion last autumn.

During the discussion, Kinew declared, We’re coming to put in electronic medical records, and we’ll be able to manage it for you, for the patient. According to Kinew’s announcement on Thursday, the province plans to provide updated digital and plastic options by the following year.

Additionally, the application method will be expedited to facilitate issuing new cards and modifying current ones for Manitobans.

With the help of our budget, Manitoba will have a digital choice and a plastic card in the twenty-first century. It’s only common sense. We have encountered the many voices of Manitobans expressing their need for change.

By this time around next year, the first cards will be sent as the work has commenced. To move the health healthcare system from manual paperwork and fax machines to electronic patient records, the province plans to introduce these new cards by 2025.

Benefits of new plastic Manitoba health card

The new plastic cards are an integral component of a bigger initiative in Manitoba to digitize health care services, which will eventually result in speedier test results and electronic patient data.

In the upcoming months, Kinew stated, further information on the composition and style of the new plastic card would be disclosed. A digitization option for the card is part of the development plan, which will help Manitobans carry and utilize the card more easily to receive health care services.

The province was able to swiftly distribute plastic immunization cards to the general public throughout the pandemic. On the other hand, many Manitobans have long wished for the elimination of paper health cards.
